New Photos and collages that live on your desktop

Your desktop, framed.

Mantel hangs your favourite photos right on the Mac desktop: a print in a white mat, an instant snap with a handwritten caption, a strip of film. Every photo keeps its real shape — portraits stay tall, panoramas stay wide.

Frames

Five ways to hang a photo.

Pick a frame per piece and add a slight tilt if you like things a little less tidy.

Gallery

A thin white mat with a soft shadow and an optional printed label.

Instant

A deep bottom border with your caption in a handwriting-style font.

Film strip

Dark film with sprocket holes that let the desktop show through. Across or down.

Bare

Just the photo with rounded corners — quiet and modern.

Tape

A print held up by two strips of masking tape.

Collages

Collages that never crop a face off.

Mantel works out every collage from the photos’ own proportions, so nothing is squashed into squares.

RowSide by side at one height
ColumnStacked at one width
JustifiedNeat rows that fill the width exactly
StackA loose fan, each print framed on its own
FriezeA continuous strip of film

Living on the desktop

🖼Pieces sit just above your desktop icons, on every Space, and stay out of Mission Control and ⌘-Tab
🧲Drag to move; they snap to screen edges and a soft grid
🔒Lock a piece and clicks pass straight through it
🔁Slideshow: crossfade to the next photo every few minutes, hours or once a day
🖥Positions are remembered per display and come back after a restart
How it works

From folder to mantelpiece in seconds.

1

Bring in photos

Drop files or whole folders onto the Mantel window, or pick albums from Apple Photos. Mantel keeps its own copy, so pieces survive tidying up.

2

Make a piece

One photo or a collage. Choose a layout, a frame, a size, a tilt and captions for each photo or the whole piece.

3

Hang it

It appears on your desktop. Drag it where you like, lock it, or hide everything at once from the menu bar.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does Mantel need access to my Photos library?

Only if you want to import from Apple Photos. macOS asks once, and Mantel copies just the photos you pick. Adding image files or folders needs no permission.

What happens if I move or delete the original files?

Nothing — your pieces keep working. Mantel stores its own copy of every photo you add (resized to a sensible size) in its Application Support folder.

Will pieces get in the way of my windows?

No. They sit at desktop level, below your app windows and just above desktop icons. Lock a piece and clicks go right through it.

Can it start when I log in?

Yes. Turn on “Start Mantel when you log in” in Settings and your pieces come back where you left them, on each display.

macOS says it can’t verify the developer.

Mantel is distributed directly from this website. Here’s how to open it the first time.
